About Cloud Base

Our home is owned by Anthony and Mikiko Maika – One of the nicest homes on the island. It is our responsibility to take care of it and treat it as if it were our own. We take care of all the maintenance and home improvements. We perform daily “Ship Shape” chores in order to keep it clean and organized.

Our water comes from a water catchment system that is only filled when it rains. We are very careful about how we use water, we never waste water because we don’t know when we will get rain.

We fill the right hand sink container about 2 inches with soapy water and bleach. We use this for washing until it is no longer clean and then we slowly dump it down the left side sink. When we rinse the dishes in the left hand side of the sink we turn the faucet on very low and try to catch the water we use so that we can refill the right-hand side of the sink when it becomes dirty. We know this sounds like a lot of extra work but you would be amazed at how much water this saves.

We take “sailor” showers. This means you get in, get wet and turn off the water, then soap up or shampoo up and turn the water back on to rinse off. Very fast and with as little water usage as possible. We have an orange bucket in the shower that always needs to be full because when we lose power, which happens frequently, this is the only way to wash off.

Again, try to use the least amount of water as possible, DO NOT let the water just run, always on and off it.

The water in the rain catchment is also our drinking water. We use a “Sawyer” water filter that takes out 99.99% of all the bad stuff. We always have cold water filled in the fridge, the Orange cooler filled and the orange bucket filled at all times. This assures us if we lose power that we always have drinking water. Scott or Nick will demonstrate how this is done.
